Floaters seem as though there is a fly or a hair strand across your field of vision. Floaters are caused by the degeneration of the jelly inside the eye. It might be normal and okay to have floaters for years, but if new floaters accompanied by dancing lights appear, then it is cause for alarm. If they appear, make an appointment with your optometrist to have your eyes examined within twenty-four hours. The flashing lights may be as a result of a detached retina or a tear in the retina, both of which have the potential to cause a permanent loss of vision if not remedied promptly.
